Cold Saw

The cold saw is what Angelbotics uses to cut all of our stock to length. It is not equipped to cut ferrous metals such as steel, however it makes incredibly short work of aluminum and plastics.

Care must be taken to properly operate the cold saw. Clamp your workpiece in the large vice attached to the base, make sure you know where to cut by lining the edge of the blade up with the mark previously made (pulling down the saw without clicking the on switch is the best way to do this). Make sure you have a good grip on the handle, pull the on switch, and pull the saw down onto your material, making sure not to go too fast, as you risk damaging the carbide teeth on the saw blade. Ensure the saw has come to a complete stop before raising the blade from the cut.

Safety things:

  • Always keep your hands well clear of the blade. This should almost go without saying, but make sure you don't try to adjust your workpiece while the saw is running.

  • Always wait until the blade slows down to a complete stop before loosening the vice and grabbing your cut stock, and always make sure the vice is as tight as you can make it without damaging the material.

  • Wear eye and hearing protection. This machine is very loud while cutting, so make sure you don some hearing protection and of course, eye protection for the chips that fly off.

  • Shout, "Cutting!" before powering on the saw and making a cut, because the cold saw can be very loud, and extremely distracting.
