Fusion 360

CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing)

To generate toolpaths for manufacturing parts on the Shapeoko Pro, the team uses Autodesk Fusion 360. After the CAD subteam designs the parts that need to be manufactured, the CNC operator exports the parts as .STEP files from Onshape and imports into Fusion, where the toolpaths are then created by the operator, before being sent to Carbide Motion as a .NC file.

The toolpaths for a piece being created

The "Bore" toolpath is used for small, #9 drill bit sized (0.196" in diameter) holes, the "2D Adaptive" toolpath is used to cut out large areas, such as holes for bearings, and the "2D Contour" toolpath is used to cut out the outline of the piece and create stepped holes for flanged bearings to be inserted.
